WINTER WEATHER HEALTH HAZARDS

A Canadian Winter normally spans from mid-December to mid-March, with January and February being the coldest months. The first day of Spring is March 20th, which is when the weather usually starts to warm up. Let’s hope for a short Winter! Until then, make sure you continue to stay safe. The snowy, icy, cold weather can cause or contribute to many health problems.

SHOVELLING SNOW RAISES YOUR RISK FOR HEART ATTACK

Did you know that those with high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes increase their risk of having a heart attack while shovelling snow? This is because your body constricts blood vessels to keep blood close to your core when it is cold. Pairing this with sudden, strenuous activities like snow shovelling can be the cause of serious health problems like a heart attack. It is best to use a smaller shovel, take lots of breaks or have a neighbour or family member without pre-existing health conditions take responsibility for clearing snow.

Book an appointment with an MD Connected doctor to create a plan to manage your high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.

SKIN CONCERNS DUE TO WINTER WEATHER

We are getting close to Spring, but until then, remember to continue to bundle up and protect yourself from the harsh weather. Pre-existing conditions, often related to skin, can be worsened by cold weather. Rosacea, Eczema, Psoriasis and Raynaud’s disease are all skin conditions that can become more irritated in the Winter.

Even if you do not have pre-existing skin conditions, exposure to the cold weather and dry winds can still cause damage by drawing out moisture and leaving your skin feeling itchy and cracked. This can get worse when you are suddenly inside, exposed to hot dry air from the heater. If you’re not proactive in moisturizing and protecting your skin from exposure to the cold, your skin can become cracked and irritated to the point of bleeding.

If you are having skin problems that you would like to get under control, book an appointment with our doctors. In the meantime, read through our tips to care for adult acne.
